Mall Rivals Barber and character customization
Walk in, sit down, change your look — cosmetics with mall energy, not a profit node.
You are not stuck with the face you spawned. The Comeback Update added a barber / styling shop inside the mall: walk in, sit down, change outfit and appearance on the spot. The same patch rebuilt player and NPC character models — customers, employees, mall cop, and the Shady Dealer included — so old screenshots lie about how people look. This page covers what the barber is for, what it is not, and how full customization fits the 1.0 mall.
What you can change
Studio notes for the character rebuild promised hair, beards, hats, and outfits. Comeback’s barber is the live interaction: a physical shop in the building, not a pause-menu wallpaper. Use it to:
- Look distinct in co-op so voice chat matches a body.
- Reskin before you take screenshots or stream.
- Change identity after a ShameTV special featuring your previous haircut.
Appearance also exists as an employee stat on recruitment benches. That bar is for workers you hire. The barber is for you. Do not confuse the two when a candidate’s “appearance” score looks like a fashion DLC.
What the barber is not
- Not a revenue building. It will not beat Pharmacy on a Mall Buyout timer.
- Not a Workshop folder. Cosmetics here are first-party mall furniture/NPC flow.
- Not a substitute for controls practice. A new hat does not teach grab and tablet.
- Not required for achievements. Steam’s nine milestones are sales and staffing, not haircuts.
Timeline so videos make sense
- Pre-Comeback: Older models, limited or no on-the-spot restyle. March trailers aged fast.
- June 2026 Comeback: Barber opens; characters rebuilt; mall exterior and events arrive. Fresh saves recommended.
- August 2026 1.0: Full release keeps the barber and doubles down on living NPCs, informants, and social systems. Customization sits beside the perk Social branch as “face in the mall,” not as a damage stat.
If a creator says “the 1.0 update added the barber,” correct the timeline politely and keep watching for till advice.
Practical tips
- Style between rushes, not during a mall event wholesale sprint.
- In PvP, a loud outfit helps allies spot you — and helps rivals target you. Choose on purpose.
- After jail or a long chase, a new look will not clear your record. Heat is mechanical; hair is not.
- Hosts running themed lobbies can ask everyone to match a dress code at the barber before day one.
- Pair a clean look with a clean shop if you care about screenshots; attractiveness still wants stocked shelves more than your beanie.
Nearby mall toys
Comeback also dropped the casino and exterior walks. The barber is the sober cousin: no house edge, no unfinished street mesh, just a chair. Use the casino when you want to donate to the house. Use the barber when you want to stop looking like the default tutorial mannequin.
FAQ-minded reminders
Steam store copy now highlights character customization in the marketing block next to employees and “try your luck.” That is flavor parity with systems that actually print money. Budget time like décor: after the till works, before you min-max wallpaper.
When Creedon adds more slots or paid cosmetics, this page will say so from Steam news — not from a rumor screenshot. Until then, walk in, sit down, change, and get back to hauling boxes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers players actually search for in Mall Rivals.
Where is the barber in Mall Rivals?
Inside the mall as a physical styling shop added in the Comeback Update. Walk in and sit to change your look.
Does customization affect sales?
Your haircut is not a till stat. Employee appearance scores on benches are separate. Attractiveness still cares more about stocked shelves.
Was the barber part of version 1.0?
It shipped in Comeback (June 2026) and remains in 1.0. See Comeback notes.
Can Workshop mods replace the barber?
Workshop is mostly textures for stores. Use the in-mall barber for your avatar — details on Workshop.
