Bodyguards and combat in Mall Rivals
1.0 rebuilt the HP, stamina, and combat system. Bodyguards punch. Cops chase. Bats are a build, not a prop.
Version 1.0 rebuilt the combat layer. HP, stamina, bat swings — what was a prop in April became a real build branch by August. Bodyguards are the player-owned combat unit: hire at recruitment benches, assign as a guard, watch them intercept thief customers and throw punches at rival players who walk into your store with weapons drawn. This page covers the combat system 1.0 turned real, the perk branch that feeds it, and why a bat is no longer something you grab by accident.
If you came here to understand crime and police, read the crime and police guide first. This page is the combat and guard layer underneath.
What 1.0 changed for combat
April clips show players picking up bats as a environmental joke. 1.0 made combat a perk branch — six branches total, with Combat as one of them. The design intent is clear: you build a character, and Combat is a legitimate path alongside Commerce, Crime, Labor, Mobility, and Social. A bat is not a prop; it is a tool your build activates.
The HP and stamina system also became real. You have hit points. You have a stamina bar. Swinging a bat costs stamina. Getting hit costs HP. A bodyguard with Combat perk investment will absorb hits and deal damage. A civilian who grabs a bat out of frustration will swing once and gasp.
Hiring a bodyguard
Walk to recruitment benches, same as hiring a cashier or stocker. The hire menu shows candidates with Combat as a visible stat alongside other attributes. Appearance is also a stat on benches — do not confuse a candidate’s looks with their willingness to throw punches. Higher Combat score means a more effective guard.
Once hired, assign the bodyguard role at the bench. Unassigned workers idle. An unassigned combat hire is not protecting anything.
Bodyguards placed inside your store will:
- Intercept thief customers who pocket merchandise
- Engage rival players who enter your store with a bat or spray can drawn
- Patrol the immediate area around your store entrance
Bodyguards placed outside will wander the corridor and may engage threats before they reach your door.
Thief customer interception
The customer types page covers thief NPCs — customers who try to pocket merchandise. In a shop without bodyguards, thief customers represent an inventory leak you only see on the day sheet. In a shop with a Combat-built bodyguard, the interception is visible: the guard engages, a scuffle plays out, and the thief either drops the goods or pays a fine.
This is why Crime-perk players and high-attractiveness shops care about bodyguards. A disorganized shop with weak guards is a free target. A well-staffed shop with a Combat bodyguard changes the calculation.
Player versus player combat
When another player walks into your store with a bat or spray can, your bodyguard will engage. The interaction depends on both players’ perk builds:
- A Commerce-only player with no Combat investment will lose a physical fight to a Combat-perk bodyguard quickly
- A Combat-perk player can match or overpower a bodyguard, but not without using stamina and HP
- Police will respond to physical altercations in progress — see crime and police
The bat itself is a weapon you can equip. Walk up, aim, swing. Stamina drains with each swing. A player who swings until their stamina empties is then unable to defend themselves until the bar refills.
Combat perk branch
Combat is one of six branches in the 1.0 perk tree. Key nodes relevant to bodyguard play:
- Guard training — makes bodyguards more aggressive and durable
- Bat mastery — increases damage and reduces stamina cost per swing
- Intimidation — reduces the likelihood of being targeted by thief customers
- First aid — recovers HP faster when not in combat
- Shield — reduces incoming damage from other players
A full Combat build is not required to hire a bodyguard. But a Combat build with a bodyguard is significantly more dangerous to challenge than a Commerce build with an unarmed hire.
Police response to combat
Physical fights trigger mall cop response. The crime and police guide covers jail, fines, ShameTV broadcasts, and the bribes system. Combat in a corridor or inside a store is visible to patrols. A bodyguard who wins a fight still may have their employer fined or jailed depending on the lobby settings and what the officer witnessed.
Bodyguards do not pay fines directly. The owner of the store does. Budget for potential fines when running a Combat guard in a PvP lobby.
When to run a Combat build
Worth it when:
- FFA lobbies where rival players regularly enter stores with weapons
- High-value Electronics or Pharmacy units where thief customer interception saves real inventory value
- Co-op where you are designated as the “enforcer” on a team
- High-traffic stores where bodyguard placement deters opportunistic theft
Probably not worth it when:
- Quiet co-op with friends who do not equip bats
- Solo play where thief customers are the main concern (a basic bodyguard handles this)
- Short cash-target matches where the lease cost and perk investment do not pay back before the timer
Bodyguards versus shame TV
A bodyguard who wins a fight does not erase the social penalty if the fight was recorded. ShameTV broadcasts the incident regardless of who won. A Combat build that relies on bodyguards to win fights while ignoring the social consequences will still appear on mall screens with a “caught on camera” label.
The shady dealer guide covers how to manage your public image. Combat and Social work together — a强力 guard who also bribes correctly has both teeth and a clean face on ShameTV.
Practical guard deployment checklist
- Hire at recruitment benches. Check the Combat stat before accepting.
- Assign bodyguard role at the bench immediately after hire.
- Place the guard inside your store near the entrance for maximum interception coverage.
- Budget for potential fine events — combat in a corridor is visible to police.
- Pair with Social perks if you want the guard to also manage public image.
- Check that your store’s attractiveness is high — organized shops attract fewer thief customers to begin with.
Frequently asked
Q: Can I fight other players directly without a bodyguard? A: Yes. You have HP, stamina, and can equip a bat. But a Commerce or Labor build will lose to a Combat-perk player or bodyguard quickly.
Q: Do bodyguards work against NPC thief customers? A: Yes. One of their primary functions is intercepting thief customers who attempt to pocket merchandise.
Q: Can rivals bribe their way out of bodyguard consequences? A: Police response depends on lobby settings and what the officer witnessed. The bribes system is on the crime and police page.
Q: Is Combat the best perk branch? A: It is the best for defending a store and winning physical confrontations. Commerce is better for revenue. Crime is better for aggressive theft. No single branch dominates — they serve different playstyles.
